About a third of tenants in major German cities say the rent they pay is very high, while 64 percent consider their home rent to be adequate, according to a survey by the Forsa Institute for the Measurement of Opinion Indicators commissioned by the German Confederation of Trade Unions.
There are hardly any differences between East and West Germany in this regard, but the differences between age groups are clear; while only 17% of tenants over the age of 60 see their rents as very high, the percentage rises to 38% among those aged 30-44, to 44% among those under the age of 30, and the total percentage is 32%.
Tenants surveyed were also asked to assess the effectiveness of some measures to curb rising rents in major cities, according to the German news agency DPA.
